Where the breed comes from

The breed takes its name from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where it became fashionable in the late nineteenth century. Earlier ancestry is often discussed, but a neat origin story should not be treated as settled historical evidence. The modern breed has smooth and long coat varieties.

Smooth or long coat?

The smooth coat is short and close; the long coat has feathering that needs particular attention behind the ears and around the legs. Neither coat tells you whether a dog will be outgoing, quiet or comfortable with children. Meet the individual and ask about their experience of ordinary household life.

Size is not a health target

The UK breed standard prefers 1.8–2.7 kg, but a standard is a description, not a prescription for every pet. Your vet should assess body condition and build. Do not restrict food to force an adult into a show weight. Choose comfort, sound movement and easy breathing over extreme appearance.

What temperament means in real life

Some are bold and sociable; others are cautious, sensitive to handling or easily overwhelmed. Genetics, pain, learning and previous experiences all matter. Ask how this particular dog responds to unfamiliar people, separation, noise and veterinary handling. A breed label cannot promise compatibility.
